Grounded, Growing, Thriving
Root & Thrive was established in January 2026, born from countless conversations with colleagues who shared the same frustration — what comes next for students with special needs after they leave the school system? As an educator, I often found myself wishing someone would create something inclusive, meaningful, and truly supportive. Living in Eastern Montana, where resources can be limited, I realized that change wasn’t going to happen unless someone stepped forward to make it happen.
So in January 2026, I decided to take that leap. I didn’t have every detail figured out — I just knew something needed to exist. Within two weeks, what started as an idea quickly became my entire focus. My world shifted in the best way. I decided that I would leave my teaching job when the school year was over, began the process of forming a nonprofit, and found a name that captured the heart of the vision: Root & Thrive. To me, it means grounding ourselves where we are planted and not just surviving, but truly thriving.
Root & Thrive was created to bring meaning, connection, and opportunity — not only to those we serve, but to everyone involved. At its core, the nonprofit exists to provide adults facing barriers to employment with job skills, independence, confidence, and community. But to me, it is even more than that. It is a place where people belong.
Whether someone is navigating recovery from substance use, living with special needs, or facing any barrier to employment or stability, Root & Thrive is for them. This is a space built on dignity, growth, and purpose.
We are here for you. And always — I am rooting for you.
With love,
Laurel Bartos
